CUPERTINO - Meg Whitman, Republican candidate for governor, issued a statement Aug. 21 opposing the state Senate's decision to approve the Governor's proposal to allow the early release of 27,000 prisoners and form a commission to consider revising prison sentencing:

"This is an unbelievable violation of the trust Californians put in their leaders to carry out the first duty of government - public safety. Letting tens of thousands of convicted felons out of prison because we lack space is the most glaring example of the politicians in Sacramento abdicating their responsibility to keep Californians safe.''

Whitman also opposes the creation of a sentencing commission:

"It is a dangerous and poorly disguised attempt to overturn the will of voters who overwhelming approved the Three Strikes and You're Out Law. Voters expect their elected leaders to make the crucial decisions to protect their safety. Handing the power to an unelected panel that is not accountable to anyone is unacceptable, irresponsible and flatly wrong. I urge the Assembly to vote the proposals down."
